Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning, usually abbreviated as WAR, is an MMO set in the world of Warhammer, the second of its kind.An earlier Warhammer MMO made by Climax was in development around 2003, but that first version fell through spectatcularly when it tanked at the E3 and Games Workshop pulled its funding.

  • I was first introduced to Warhammer Online, when it was added last minute to GameSpot.com’s E3 2006 stage show. As one of the hosts of the show, my responsibility was to research the game and the franchise, gather questions from the audience, and give a thoughtful informative interview with whomever had been sent over from the development team.

Introduction

War is everywhere in Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning (WAR), the new MMORPG from the creators of Dark Age of Camelot. Based on Games Workshop's popular Warhammer fantasy war game, WAR features next generation Realm vs. Realm (RvR) game play that will immerse players in a world of perpetual conflict. Upon entering WAR, players must determine their allegiance and join an Army. Those inclined towards the side of good may fight for the Armies of Order as an obstinate Dwarf, noble High Elf, or loyal human soldier of the Empire. Those inclined towards darker deeds may side with the sinister Armies of Destruction as a savage Greenskin (Orc or Goblin), corrupt Dark Elf, or marauding human worshipper of Chaos.

RvR combat takes place on three fronts where ancient foes wage an unending war - Dwarfs vs. Greenskins, High Elf vs. Dark Elf, and Empire vs. Chaos. Players begin the game fighting their ancestral enemy, but are free to journey to other fronts to help their allies in their ongoing struggles. The ultimate goal in RvR combat is the sacking of an enemy's capital city. To do this, an army must invade and take control of the opposition's homeland. Deciding battles take place on objective-based battlefields and in instanced scenarios - point-balanced battles that make use of NPC mercenaries known as Dogs of War. For the first time, WAR's RvR system integrates both Player vs. Player (PvP) combat and Player vs. Environment (PvE) quests on the same map. Every aspect of the game, including PvE missions, is geared towards the greater war in some important way. However, players are not required to participate in PvP combat, and may aid in the RvR war effort and enjoy the game in its entirety via PvE content.

Additional Features:

- A robust combat system introduces Player Tactics (earned powers you equip prior to battle) and Morale Skills (combat options that increase in power when the momentum of battle is in your favor).

- Player models that change to reflect the relative power of a character (i.e., Orcs grow in size and Dwarfs' beards get longer). Customizable armor and a visual guild system allow a player to make their character truly unique.

- Embark on an epic quest to complete the Tome of Knowledge and unlock Warhammer lore, detailed monster information, and major story plotlines.

    Small contingents of Order and Destruction forces converge upon the main north-south route through Troll Country in an effort to secure the strategic trade route for their respective sides … without attracting the attention of wandering trolls.
    The Stonetroll Crossing scenario is open again for characters of all levels! Take control of the Troll Pacifier for your realm! Charge forth, and remember: the only good troll is a dead troll.

    - Pet information will now be shown on the group UI, allowing you to see health and click to select (and be available to third party addons).

    - Bottomless Stein Trophy will now display the correct appearance for all careers.

    - Consumable items with a cast time, such as teleportation scrolls, are not consumed anymore if you abort the cast before the cast completes.

    The ancient site known as Doomfist Crater is one steeped in myth and lore. Now Order and Destruction forces converge upon the broken landscape, determined to deny their enemies access to whatever treasures may lay buried beneath the surface.
    This weekend Days of Doom will be the weekend warfront from 12:00 on Friday to 12:00 on Monday Altdorf time. You get +50% XP and Renown in the Doomfist Crater scenario, and extra rewards from completing the event tasks.

    - Fortress trainers wear Invader gear now.

    - Healing from life tap proc effects will now count on the player triggering the proc instead of the caster of the buff. This makes it consistent with how damage and healing procs work.
    - Pets, Turrets & Daemons are now spawned in closest valid position from the spot you tried to summon in. This means that if you stand on the edge of a wall and summon a pet, they will summon on the wall next to you, rather than looking like they are on the ground below the wall.

    Weekend Warfront: Unforgiving Seas
    During one of the recent battles upon the Inner Sea, one of our vessels foundered upon the rocky shoals of the Isle of the Dead. What is worse is that our enemies have done the same. Now both sides scrabble for parts from the many other wrecks so that they may escape the island before their souls are lost. We must ensure that our allies escape that dreaded place.
    Two ships have run aground while moving through the storm-wracked seas of Serpent' Passage. One of these vessels belongs to the High Elves, while the other is of Dark Elf origin. Both ships carry valuable supplies that we must claim if we are to gain an edge in this war. At the same time, we must deny these resources to our enemies.
    This weekend Unforgiving Seas will be the weekend warfront from 12:00 on Friday to 12:00 on Monday Altdorf time. You get +50% XP and Renown in the Serpent's Passage scenario, and extra rewards from completing the event tasks.
    Realm versus Realm
    City Siege
    - Warlord locations will now be shown on map during stage 2.
    - Fixed an issue causing pet to not recieve champion size when you're chosen as King Champion. Note they only increase size for better view and only receive wound buff but no any other champion's buff.
    Open World Campaign
    - Siege ram locations are now shown on the map for all players in the same zone/region. The intention is to increase fighting in the zone and the danger in bringing the ram to the enemy keep. If it doesn't work out as intended it might get reverted.
    Fortress
    - If you die in an inactive fort you will respawn in the previous zone. 'No need to respawn in an inactive fort.'
    - Fort Siege Camps only spawn if the fort is active. 'The attackers haven't pushed that far yet, so why do you need a safe spot there?'

    - You can now click the 'You were added by X as a friend' messages to add them as a friend.
    - New items will now be filtered into the correct bag via the 'Item Preferences' on the right of each bag section.
    - Appearance gear will now only be shown to members of the same realm: A tradeoff to properly reorganise how data and packets are sent, to reflect how it was on Mythic (adjusts performance).
    Pathfinding
    As some of you may remember we did some pathfinding tests last year. We are re-enabling them on a zone by zone basis. This means that pets and npcs should no longer walk through walls or walk up walls.

    - Moonfang Teef: You will now have to collect the teeth of the Moonfang Spottas
    - Empire kill collectors once again are willing to pay for what you kill.
    - Chaos kill collectors once again are willing to pay for what you kill.

    - Vulgar Display of Power: This PQ is once again completable

    Beastlord/Keeper Set
    - Repeatable quests have been added for the tokens. They are given by the corresponding vendors. 'The intended way via RvR quests remains faster. This is meant for those who lost their tokens from crashes.'
